Teaching Predictive Control Using Specification-based Summative Assessments

Including Model Predictive Control (MPC) in the undergraduate/graduate control curriculum is becoming vitally important due to growing adoption of MPC many industrial areas. In this paper, we present an overview predictive course taught by authors at Imperial College London between 2018 and 2021. We discuss how evolved from focusing solely on linear formulation covering nonlinear some its extensions. also a novel specification-based summative assessment framework, written MATLAB, that was developed assess knowledge understanding students tasking them with designing controller for real-world problem. The MATLAB framework designed provide freedom design implement any they wanted. submitted controllers were then assessed against over 30 variations problem gauge student robustness topics course.
